Most recently, I’ve noticed people hesitating over small purchases.
Coffee.
Flowers.
Bakery treats.
A box of donuts for the office.
Not because these things would wreck a budget, but because life has become expensive enough that we now mentally categorize small comforts as “unnecessary.”
When hardworking adults are already busy paying for responsibilties, repairs, groceries, gas, home maintenance and obligations, softness becomes the first thing we quietly cut back on.
Small gestures carry emotional value.
A dozen donuts brought to a meeting.
Cookies dropped off for a neighbor.
Coffee shared during a catch-up conversation.
Small gifts of “just because”.
They are rarely about the item itself.
They’re about atmosphere.
Warmth.
Thoughtfulness.
Connection.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Long Beach and many great communities — is that neighbors find ways to show up for one another in small ways that say “I thought about you while moving through my day.”
Interestingly, the person bringing the donuts usually leaves feeling better too.
Generosity does work both ways. No extravagant gestures needed. Just small reminders that life feels better when we participate in it together.
More soon.
Warmly,
